6 April 2019

Ok so the Romans brought straight roads and bathes to the UK, guess what they also brought us Grapes and Oysters and they're right here, here on Mersea Island ready for you to cycle too!

A scenic cycle route from Waldegraves along the bridleway to Mersea Island Vineyard and back along the coastal path. This half day journey offers picturesque bridleways, sea views, wildlife, and Merseas very own vineyard.

Ride summary:

- Approximately a 4-mile circular journey.

- Expect to pedal 30 minutes either side of the vineyard at a leisurely pace (c. 8mph).

- Suitable for adults and teens. Not suitable for young riders or cycle trailers.

- Cycle Hire and route-maps from Mersea Adventure Centre

The circular route offers both scenic and coastal views which will take you on a variation of bridleways, lanes and beach paths - one or two footpaths link the route and riders are requested to dismount and walk their bikes in these areas.

Starting the journey cycling down tranquil bridleways with the chance to encounter some of Mersea’s wildlife, you also have great opportunities for stunning views of the coast and of course this comes with wonderful photo opportunities. Upon arriving at the vineyard, you have the opportunity to have a walk around and see the history which the site has to offer. As well as this Maria’s Vintage Tea Room located at the vineyard offers tea, coffee, cake and full lunches.

For the final leg of the journey this route will take you down towards the coast where the incredible views only improve. This is a great chance to see the sea front and what better way to do this than on a bike. Returning to the campsite through spectacular coastal scenery.
